Punjab Kings are eagerly waiting for medical clearance from the England cricket board on Jonny Bairstow as the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League is about to start in three weeks. Bairstow has been an important addition to Punjab Kings in IPL 2022. Punjab Kings bought him at the 2022 mega auction for 6.75 crores.
Jonny Bairstow has been out of action from cricket since September 2022 when he broke his left leg and dislocated his ankle days before the start of the final Test between England and South Africa. It is reported that he broke his leg while enjoying golf with mates in Yorkshire and underwent a surgical procedure in London a couple of days later. He missed out on England’s World Cup Victory in Australia.
It was widely reported that he would make comeback through IPL 2023. As per a report in the ESPNcricinfo, Punjab Kings are in constant touch with Bairstow and the ECB, keeping a regular check on his recovery rate. As they await the final medical clearance from England’s Cricket Board.
Bairstow scored 253 runs in 11 innings in IPL 2022 with a strike rate of 144.57 along with two half-centuries. On the other hand, according to a few reports Punjab Kings might replace Bairstow with Matt Short if fails to achieve fitness at right time. Matt Short is the Second leading scorer of BBL 2022/23 with 458 runs in 14 matches and a Strike Rate of 144.47 including a Century also.
Punjab Kings will be desperate to start fresh and put up a better performance in IPL 2023 under the leadership of their new skipper Shikhar Dhawan. The Indian Cricketer Shikhar Dhawan is going to be the new captain of the Punjab Kings squad in the upcoming IPL replacing Mayank Agarwal. In IPL 2022 Punjab Kings finished at the 7th spot after managing 7 wins in 14 matches.
Punjab Kings has appointed 2019 world cup winning coach Trevor Bayliss’ as the head coach for IPL 2023 and had a very good mini-auction where they brought Sam Curran for a staggering Rs. 18.5 crores the costliest buy in IPL history. They have also added the likes of Sikandar Raza and Shivam Singh to their squad.
Punjab Kings (PBKS) will play their opening game of IPL 2023 against Kolkata Knight Riders. The match will be played on April 1 at Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. In IPL 2023, Punjab will aim to grab its first-ever IPL title.
