MI vs UPW Highlights WPL 2023: Ecclestone six helps UP Warriorz beat Mumbai Indians by five wickets

ello and welcome to Sportstar’s Live coverage of the WPL 2023 Match 15 between Mumbai Indians vs UP Warriorz happening at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai.

UP Warriorz beats Mumbai Indians

Sophie Ecclestone smashes Wong straight over the sightscreen as UP Warriorz beats Mumbai Indians by 5 wickets. This is simply brillliant from UP Warriorz as they started well with the ball, restricted Mumbai for 127 runs and then although lost quick wickets, held their nerve to register a five-wicket win over Mumbai Indians. Ecclestone and Deepti were calm at the closing stages with Grace Harris playing a brilliant cameo of 28-ball 39.

UPW 123/5 in 19 Overs

Healy Matthews back into the attack and she has bowled deliveries well outside the off, forcing the batters to drag the ball to the vacant gaps. Deepti Sharma then took advantage of a short delivery as she stayed back in the crease and smashed it to the long-on boundary. There was review for a lbw and run-out and replays suggested there was spike when the ball hit the pad and the Ecclestone was well with in her crease. UP Warriorz needs 5 runs in 6 balls.

UPW 115/5 in 18 Overs

Ecclestone puts away a loose delivery from Amelia Kerr to the deep backward square leg boundary to cut down the equation but Kerr does well to bowl a couple of dot balls to end the over. 13 needed in 12 balls.

UPW 109/5 in 17 Overs

Saika Ishaque bowls a brilliant 17th over and gives just three runs as UP Warriorz now needs 19 runs in 18 balls. Sophie Ecclestone and Deepti Sharma have a job in their hands.

UPW 106/5 in 16 Overs

Grace Harris smashed a couple of boundaries to put UP ahead but then Wong pulls off a brilliant catch at the long-on region to once again tilt the scale in Mumbai’s favour. This is sensational comeback from Kerr as she bounced back after being smashed for two boundaries and Harris falls for a 28-ball 39.

UPW 97/4 in 15 Overs

Grace Harris has unleashed herself and has paced her innings fantastically as she hammered Amanjot Kaur for two back to back boundaries – a scop over the keeper’s heas and then a fierce cut through the backward point to bring the equation to run-a ball. Deepti, meanwhile is taking no risks and is happy to play the second fiddle and rotating the strike.

UPW 86/4 in 14 Overs

Matthews back into the attack and Deepti Sharma along with Grace Harris have played out a cautious over, without taking any risks and just rotating the strike. UP Warriorz needs 42 runs in 36 balls.

UPZ 82/4 in 13 Overs

Grace Harris has picked the bones out of a back-of-length delivery and pulled ferociously through the mid-wicket and then rolled her wrists over to place the short delivery from Sciver-Brunt to the deep square leg fence. UP Warriorz are right in this game and needs 46 runs in 42 balls.

UPW 72/4 in 12 Overs

Amelia Kerr with the breakthrough and the spinner has picked the prized scalp of McGrath. The batter perishes while trying to be aggressive as she hits one straight back and Kerr takes an excellent return catch to keep Mumbai in the game. Deepti Sharma is in the missle and she joins Grace Harris. UP Warriorz needs 56 runs in 48 balls.

UPW 66/3 in 11 Overs

McGrath is looking in great touch as she takes Saika Ishaque for a leather hunt hammering the spinner for 14 runs and UP has recovered the early loss of wickets. A fierce cut through the point and then a drive through the covers aided by an outside edge through the slips has brought UP back into the game.

UPW 52/1 in 10 Overs

Amelia Kerr into the attack and she begins well giving just a single. The good part from UPW’s point of view is that the run-rate is not that high as it is just near 7 rpo and a couple of good overs will see UPW take control of the game.

UPW 51/1 in 9 Overs

McGrath hammers Wong into the deep square leg stands and the intention is clear from the batter as she attacks the pacer and that was a fantastic swipe. UPW get some momentum after the time-out with McGrath taking the attacking route.

UPW 39/3 in 8 Overs

Another wonderful over from Saika Ishaque as gives just four runs, all singles to keep the pressure on UP Warriorz. They need 89 runs from 72 deliveries and this is going to be a fascinating match as both teams are fighting for momentum. At the moment, the game is sligtly in favour of Mumbai but a good partnership will bring Warriorz back in the game.

UPW 35/3 in 7 Overs

Taniya Bhatia has made up for her drop catch as she has taken a spectacular catch down the leg side to pack off Kiran Navgire and Mumbai is right in this game having picked three early wickets. This is top move from Harmanpreet as she brought in Nat Sciver-Brunt who did the trick by picking a wicket.

UPW 27/2 in 5 Overs

Issy Wong is into the attack and Mumbai took a LBW review after Healy played across the line and missed the ball. It looked plumb but the onfield decision was Not Out. However, it was three reds and Healy failed to make use of the two lives that were handed to her. Mumbai Indians fielders are ecstatic and why not as they have got the prized wicket of Healy and that’s a massive one. However, Mumbai’s poor fielding continues as Yastika drops Tahila McGrath the very next ball and the batter gets off the mark with a boundary to the fine leg fence.

UPW 21/1 in 5 Overs

Right then Saika Ishaque into the attack and the Purple Cap holder starts well by varying her speeds well and giving just a single to start off. Mavgire had a change in bat after the toe-end of her willow developed a crack. UPW needs 107 balls from 90 deliveries.

UPW 20/1 in 4 Overs

Navgire breaks away from the shackles as she skips down the track and hammers Matthews over the sightscreen for a maximum and that was a brilliant shot from the right-hander. Getting right underneath the ball and smashing it cleanly to ease some nerves.

UPW 7/1 in 3 Overs

Dropped! Not once but twice! Nat Sciver-Brunt will be hurting as the Mumbai Indians fielders haven’t supported the pacer as they have dropped Healy twice in two balls. First a flick to the deep squareleg fielder who spilt it and then a regulation catch at point was let off. Two opportunities go begging and that’s poor fielding from Mumbai while defending a small total of 127.

UPW 2/1 in 2 Overs

Harmanpreet Kaur grabs a blinder at first slip as Hayley Matthews strikes early to remove Devika Vaidya, who went for a drive but got a healthy outside edge and Kaur at first slip takes an excellent catch to put UP on the backfoot. Spin doing the trick as Kiran Navgiire joins Healy in the chase.

UPW 1/1 in 1 Over

Nat Sciver-Brunt begins proceedings with the new ball with Vaidya and Healy opening for UP. The England pacer starts well bowling a tight line outside the off-stump with Vaidya managing a single off the last ball to get off the mark and retain strike.

The Chase

So UP needs 128 runs to win and it will be a test of character for Mumbai to defend 127. UP has got a genuine chance to gun down the total and make a case for themselves to try and open the race for play-offs qualification.

Sportstar Special | TARA NORRIS: The only Associate Player in the WPL gets the tournament’s first five wicket haul

MI 127 all out in 20 Overs

Sophie Ecclestone picked a three-wicket haul with Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Deepti Sharma picking two wickets each as UP Warriorz bowled out Mumbai Indians for a paltry 127 in 20 overs. UP won the toss and elected to field first and their decision proved right as the track assisted the spinners but the Mumbai batters also aided UP’s cause with some false shots. Mumbai’s batting was tested for the first time in the tournament and it came a cropper. Back for the chase in a bit!

MI 103/7 in 17 Overs

Rajeshwari Gayakwad picks her second wicket as she cleaned up Humaria Kazi as the slow sweep went completely wrong and the ball crashed on to the stumps and this has been a clinical display with the ball from UP.

MI 98/6 in 16 Overs

Ecclestone picks her third wicket and what a spell she has bowled! Amanjot Kaur misreads a tossed up delivery and advances down the track only to get stumped by Healy and UP is making a strong comeback in this tournament. 3-0-11-3 and Ecclestone has an over to go and the spinner has certainly made a huge impact in this game.

MI 92/5 in 15 Overs

Issy Wong has taken charge of Mumbai’s innings and has eked out a couple of boundaries off Parvashi Chopra who finished a touched expensive, ending with figures of 4-0-35-0 but the spinner started well. An outside edge saw the ball run to the third-man boundary and then Wong tonked a tossed up delivery over the bowler’s head for a boundary to give some push to the Mumbai innings.

Sportstar Special | Shreyanka Patil- The 20-year-old RCB player who’s ready to take the WPL by storm

MI 81/5 in 14 Overs

Harmanpreet Kaur took a successful review for a caught behind but hit one straight into the hands of Simran Saikha the very next ball to give Deepti Sharma her first wicket. A flighted delivery and on the full length area, Harmanpreet skipped down the track and went with the shot only to hit it straight down the throat of the fielder at deep mid-wicket. UP Warriorz is firmly on top.

MI 77/4 in 13 Overs

Rajeshwari Gayakwad strikes as Amelia Kerr falls to leave Mumbai four down. Kerr went for an ambitious sweep only to get a top edge and the fielder at short fine leg doesn’t make a mistake. Mumbai is in a spot of bother having lost four wickets and the onus now lies on Harmanpreet to guide her team to a challenging total.

MI 71/3 in 12 Overs

There is no stopping Harmanpreet as the Mumbai skipper attacks Chopra and pockets two consecutive boundaries – first a brilliant pull through the mid-wicket and then gliding one past the backward point region to propel Mumbai ahead.

MI 59/3 in 11 Overs

Huge wicket and UP has the edge at this stage of the game as Ecclestone picks her second wicket by removing Matthews who falls a 30-ball 35 and the Mumbai departed just after hammering a six and showing signs of taking the attack to the opposition. Back of length delivery, Matthews went on her backfoot for a pull but got a top-edge and that was an eay take for the wicket-keeper.

MI 56/2 in 10 Overs

Deepti Sharma has been introduced into the attack as the off-spinner replaced Ecclestone and starts in an expensive fashion as Matthews tonks her for a six over the deep mid-wicket and brings the 50-up for Mumbai.

MI 45/2 in 9 Overs

Parshavi Chopra has been bowling well and the leg-spinner has kept things tight and has bowled really well in her two overs. UP has kept Mumbai quiet and has picked two wickets at the first strategic break and this is brilliant. Harmanpreet and Matthews hold the key as Mumbai aims to surge ahead.

MI 40/2 in 8 Overs

Sophie Ecclestone is into the attack and she strikes straightaway as she trapped Nat Sciver-Brunt with a flat, quicker delivery as the batter departed for an 8-ball 5 and UP has a spring in their feet. This is an excellent start from UP Women after winning the toss and opting to bowl first. Skipper Harmanpreet joins Matthews and she is off the mark with a quick single.

MI 31/1 in 6 Overs

Thta’s the end of PowerPlay and apart from Matthews’ charge, UP Warriorz have done reasonably well to take stock of the situation as Mumbai has been watchful so far. After the fall of Yastika, Nat Sciver-Brunt has joined Matthews.

MI 30/1 in 5 Overs

Anjali Sarvavi strikes and that’s a huge wicket as she castles Yastika who exposed her stumps while trying to go for a paddle over fine leg but misses it completely. Top wicket and this should boost UP’s confidence.

MI 24/0 in 4 Overs

UP misses a chance to remove Yastika Bhatia as Sravani drops a sitter off Harris. Matthews then takes the spinner for a ride as she smacks her for a couple of sixes – one over the extra cover fence and then over over the backward point point for a boundary and the power that Matthews generated was simply unbeleivable. She has got into her zone.

MI 11/0 in 3 Overs

Anjali Sarvani into the attack and the medium pacer starts well giving just five runs in her opening over. There have been no boundaries so far and that’s a good start from UP Warriorz. A wicket here inside the PowerPlay will put them in a very advantageous position.

MI 6/0 in 2 Overs

Spin from both ends and it’s Grace Harris who comes into the attack with her right-arm off break. Yastika steps out and lofts the spinner over mid-off but there isn’t much power as she collects a couple of runs. Grace does well as she doesn’t concede any further runs and gives just two from her opening over.

MI 4/0 in 1 Over

UP Warriorz start with spin and it’s Rajeshwari Gayakwad who begins proceedings with the new ball. Hayley Matthews and Yastika Bhatia open the batting for Mumbai Indians with both the openers off the mark with singles.
