PSL 2023: BCCI vs PCB – Pakistan Cricket Board might be in loggerheads with the BCCI. But PCB doesn’t leave any opportunity to copy their rival Indian board. After the success of the 10-team IPL, PCB is mulling the 10-team Pakistan Super League. PCB chairman Najam Sethi is in discussion with the existing franchises over the possibility of adding two more teams next year. Cash-strapped PCB will also get some much-needed cash infusion if they can sell two more franchises. Follow IPL 2023 & PSL 2023 LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN.
“There is immense pressure to increase the number of teams in PSL. But unfortunately, Ehsan Mani and Ramiz Raja agreed with the franchises that only six teams will play in the next two years. However, it was an eight-team project. We have to convince the franchises to include two more teams,” PCB chairman Najam Sethi told reporters.

After a five-team PSL for three seasons, the tournament finally expanded to six in 2018. Multan Sultans in 2018 was the last addition. However, with many franchise leagues mushrooming, namely ILT20 and SA20, PCB feels it’s time to add two more teams.
“No one will lose anything. If a franchise suffers a loss, the PCB will take responsibility. But there is a high demand to include two more teams, and it will be more successful with many people showing interest in being part of it. Let me tell you, even if there were ten teams now, all of them would be sold due to the high demand.” he said.
However, Sethi will now have the big task of convincing the existing six franchises to add two more teams. For BCCI, even though it consults with the stakeholders, it is more of an autonomous decision than seeking permission from stakeholders.
After an 8-team start to IPL in 2008, BCCI expanded the IPL to 10 teams back in 2011. However, soon, it returned to 8-team. After a long absence, IPL once again became a 10-team affair with the introduction of Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans in 2022.
