Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsay is getting ready for a comeback with multiple projects.
Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsay, who has built her own unique path in the European cinema with her psychological thriller stories, is currently working on multiple projects. Ramsay is a filmmaker who makes rare films compared to other directors who collaborates with indie and big studios.
The director hadn't made a movie for nearly 10 years before her best known work, 2011's We Need to Talk About Kevin, starring Tilda Swinton and Ezra Miller. Lynne Ramsay is a director who loves to do long studies on the films that she is developing, and Covid-19 pandemic, which has disrupted business in the industry, has given her the opportunity to focus on fresh ideas. Ramsay says she's been quite productive in this process.
''You always want to make something that is breaking new ground. I feel these are all things I am super interested in and they’ve taken years to develop.''
One of the films Ramsay is working on is the crime-thriller film adapted from The Handmaid's Tale writer Margaret Atwood's short story Stone Mattress, starring Julianne Moore and Sandra Oh. The story follows a woman unable to escape her traumatic past, plotting a revenge murder on a yacht in the Artic Sea, and Ramsay is determined to shoot the movie in the icy ocean. Representation of the today's environmental destruction is one of the reasons behind the insistence.
''It’s hard to put together because it’s set in the Arctic, and I’ve made it quite a high-end ship. It’s complex. It’s important it is there because it has this subtext that in some way, what’s happening in the Arctic is happening to this woman. It’s also about the environmental catastrophe. There are these layers to it about trauma, about how things from the past come back to haunt you, and how the same thing is happening in the environment. It’s set in the Arctic for a reason.''
The Scottish director also said that she is developing the 'Die, My Love' movie with Jennifer Lawrence. The movie is an adaptation of writer Ariana Harwicz's same titled, motherhood horror genre novel. The tale is portrait of a woman in rural France who is driven to madness amid marriage and motherhood. Yet, there is no official release date for the picture.
In June 2021, Ramsay announced that she was preparing for a new movie called Polaris with Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara. Despite the intense 2 years, the director said that she is still continue to develop the film, ''It’s an original project which I am still writing.'' she said.
However, in an interview with Screen Daily recently, the director pointed out that the two stars may exit the project due to their busy shooting schedules, 'It was a project we’ve been wanting for a long time… They’ve got a lot of things going on, but it was originally for those two.''
